ABB India recently completed a major automation upgrade for Bharat Petroleum Corporation’s Vadinar–Bina crude oil pipeline. This 935-kilometer pipeline forms a strategic backbone of India’s energy supply chain. Pipeline Operations Driven by Advanced Control Systems

The Vadinar–Bina pipeline transports approximately 7.8 million metric tonnes of crude oil annually to the Bina refinery. ABB replaced legacy monitoring platforms with ABB Ability SCADAvantage, a proven SCADA solution for large-scale assets. Operators now access real-time pipeline data from upgraded SCADA servers at both Vadinar and Bina terminals. As a result, response times improved and manual intervention decreased.

RTU Replacement Enhances Field-Level Automation

ABB upgraded 35 Remote Terminal Units across pumping stations, pigging stations, and sectionalizing valve sites. These RTUs collect pressure, flow, and status data from the field. Moreover, they enable precise control over distributed assets in geographically challenging environments.

Cybersecurity Becomes a Core Design Requirement

Industrial control systems face increasing cyber risks as connectivity grows. ABB addressed this challenge by implementing network segmentation, system hardening, and centralized security monitoring. Consequently, BPCL reduced exposure to cyber threats while maintaining operational continuity.
